Restaurants at the Casa Mexicana, Casavieja and Diego de Mazariegos hotels offer good fare in pleasant
surroundings, but there are also interesting independent eateries around town. Two favorites are La Casa
del Pan, up the hill at Dr. Navarro 10, and Madre Tierra, at Insurgentes 19. Casa del Pan specializes in
exquisite vegetarian dishes, fresh-baked breads, and homemade jams. Madre Tierra's attractions are its
hearty soups, fresh-baked breads and sunny patio. Pepe's Pizza, at Insurgentes 77-A, is a favorite for its
customized pizzas. Around the corner from the post office is the Cafe Mural, adorned with a beautiful wall
painting copied from the murals of Bonampak. |
Combination coffeehouses and galleries are El Bazar, at Flavio Paniagua 2 (which also rents horses and bicycles),
and La Galeria, on Miguel Hidalgo. Both places have good food and coffee and show works by local artisans. |
Another good restaurant is El Faisan, on Madero, next to the main plaza, featuring regional (Tzotzil-style)
dishes in a pleasant refurbished building. Tuluc, at Insurgentes 5, is a smoky, dimly-lit spot that serves
excellent coffee. It is a popular gathering spot among foreigners. |
Real de Guadalupe is to San Cristobal what Fifth Avenue is to New York -- the length of this major street is
flanked with shops. For amber jewelry, stop by Citlali, at Real de Guadalupe 27, and Joyeria Eclipse, at No. 26.
At No. 12 there's a small shop with no name, but with a wonderful array of native arts and crafts. |
